Switch Case or Multiple If Else Nesting in Excel | HYONKOWS

Switch Case in Excel

Under many circumstances there is a need of if else or logical switch to select a particular mode of operation during calculations especially if you're a nerd at using excel and taking it to its limits.
One of my friend had a concept which he wanted to apply on excel but was lagging with the technique of implementation, after a lot of  R&D I finally ended up with a Jugaad in which I used HLOOKUP function of excel to drive case switches.


How was it Done?

Basically the video below explains it well, though I'd like to explain the technique:




Assuming you've seen the video, here are the details of the logic I used!

  • As the HLOOKUP wasn't working well for the formulas I made the columns of the formulas in the table itself and then just added the HLOOKUP as the switch to toggle the Output. All the four cases are calculated but only one case is preceed towards the output.
  • Now while making the array to be selected it is to be noted that the table that you select should have the same formatting, in my case as I'd selected the table headers it got up all messed up.
  • Now as I'm using HLOOKUP so my 1st row would be 45, 90, 180, 360 row and and so on. So to automate the row selection procedure I started numbering from 2 onwards and mentioned it as the reference in the syntax for the HLOOKUP operation.

Its better to Hide up formulas that you used! so just select the columns and hide those.

You can still manupulate with the cases by just entering the value and I'll put the corresponding value in the cell

This post consist of an excel sheet which I used in my SD1 termwork, I tried using some freely available resources and embedded a part of my excel sheet into this blog to make it run like a software.

Making A Contour Plan On AutoCAD | Application of Polar Tracking

Drawing a sheet of the data obtained from the field is an extremely tedious task but it can't be ignored or left as it is a part of term work in the Second Year of engineering Under Pune University.

Well leaving the odds behind, the entire project  is interesting and fun in itself. The calculations are damn tough but using excel and a few formulas it’s just a matter of data entry, the computer does the work for you.

Coming Back to the point:
AutoCAD is a handy tool to plot this time consuming and error prone sheet comfortably. In this post, I shall be sharing our experience and how we accomplished this task of eating an elephant in an extremely limited time and with minimum efforts.

  • We made two teams as there were to stations that were approximately 26 meters apart.
  • As there were about 360 readings observed from each team, both the teams using different computers plotted each of the stations complete reading.
  • Once both the readings are on AutoCAD we took both the parts on PC and then compiled it into one single file.
While plotting the readings on AutoCAD the only command of maximum use to us and the only life saver was the "Polar Tracking" feature.

Once you've learned about polar tracking all you just need to use the line command and insert the distances from the point of observation

    Like for an instance you could just take the lenght like if its 20m and RL at that point is 102 so to plot this you need to use the line command l and then lock in the angle using the polar tracking feature and then type the distance 20 and then enter after that you may place a marker like a point or a small circle with a text representing the RL of that point. In this way just by the same method complete all the entries.
 This could be an extremely boring and I would be very happy to learn about new or alternative techniques, please comment below!

Finally using two Softwares some complex logic and a few cups of tea I could complete the entire project sheet not to forget my companions who worked a lot with me.

Eliminate the Need of Planimeter! | How to measure area of a toposheet



A planimeter, also known as a platometer, is a measuring instrument used to determine the area of an arbitrary two-dimensional shape.


Using a planimeter could be extremely tedious could associate your work to a lot of errors, so under such circumstances AutoCAD or any other CAD software could be of great aid. All you need is a scanner to scan the plan or geometry and convert it into its soft copy in PDF (portable document format). Once this task is accomplished calculating and manipulating area and geometry is an extremely easy task.



In the Current Context I shall be demonstrating this technique with an assignment we executed in our Engineering!



As under the subject of HWRE we had to estimate precipitation of a catchment from a toposheet

What we did is traced out the catchment area from the toposheet and scanned it to convert it into its PDF soft copy.

Once You have the softcopy of the tracing paper, import it into AutoCAD using the PDF underlay feature of AutoCAD

Once you've imported the files in AutoCAD just take the polyline command and start tracing the geometry of the PDF underlay.


Traced By Using Poly Line
After tracing the Geometry you need to scale it.
Scaling the Geometry is a bit of a task and requires some calculations.
  • Take a dimension you know for instance in my case the distance between P3 and P4 was 6.5cm so first scale the geometry in such a way that you get the same dimension when measured by dimension command (DAL)
  • Once the above step is completed you need to move scale the geometry to the actual scale it was designed for in my case the scale on the plan was 1:50000 so I scaled the figure by a multiplication factor of 50000
  • Now your figure is to the scale but it still needs a bit of modification.
  • The distances you measure won't amount to the realistic value so you need to again scale the geometry by using the scale command and a scale factor of 1/1000.
  • Finally your figure is completely ready for further execution.

Now you just need to use a few AutoCAD commands and mark the polygons and Isohyets using the line, polyline and other drafting commands.

 

Now by using the boundary (bo) command create boundaries of the area of influence of the Rainguage stations and after that just select the boundary line and then type li (list command). This command will display the area and perimeter enclosed by the polyline.

For doing this I recommend working on Layers as it will enhance the effect and ease in drafting.

Finally you can compute the areas observed along the rainfall data and perform the precipitation analysis as follows

HEC-RAS | Tutorial And Outputs



HEC-RAS is a computer program that models the hydraulics of water flow through natural rivers and other channels. Prior to the recent update to Version 5.0 the program was one-dimensional, meaning that there is no direct modeling of the hydraulic effect of cross section shape changes, bends, and other two- and three-dimensional aspects of flow. The release of Version 5.0 introduced two-dimensional modeling of flow as well as sediment transfer modeling capabilities. The program was developed by the US Department of Defense, Army Corps of Engineers in order to manage the rivers, harbors, and other public works under their jurisdiction; it has found wide acceptance by many others since its public release in 1995.

Making a 3D Staircase in Autocad


 Assalamu'Alaykum,
Making a 3D model in Autocad is quite easy. In the current post we focus on making a 3D Staircase. The Video provides a good explanation with complete details of the procedure though the low resolution being a challenge.

We hereby present the steps in detail (in writing)
1) Make a 2D plan of the staircase that you want to make by using the basic commands like Line(L)  poly line (pl), etc.
2) Create a boundary along the 1st step by using the boundary (bo)  command.
3)Extrude the 1st tread by using the extrude(extrude) command.
4) Copy the 1st extruded stair with the lower left vertex as the pick point and paste it on the top right upper vertex.
5) In similar manner complete all the treads.
6) Finally extrude the mid-landing and place it.
7) Create a mirrored version of the staircase by using the Mirror 3d (3dmirror) command and place in the appropriate position.

In this way the staircase can be easily created.

Finding the solution of Simultaneous Equations

AssalamuAlaikum,
There are a number of methods using which one can find the solution of simultaneous equations but, as in this blog I mostly emphasize the use of technology to ease the efforts. So with the same interest now I’ll be presenting how you can find the solution of simultaneous equations using a calculator and within a minute or two.
Here the calculator used is Casio fx-991MS
Follow the steps:
Step 1: Start the calculator by pressing the ON button.
Step 2: Press mode button thrice.
Step 3: Press 2 if the equation is having 2 variables else 3 if the equations is having 3 variables.
Step 4: Enter the values prompted by the calculator.
Step 5: Press =  button.
Hence you’ll get the required solution.

Using the Andriod as a plum and level tube

AsslamuAlaikum,
   Many times it happens that you're at site for checking shuttering and you've for got the plum or the plum isn't in your immediate reach, it becomes very difficult to get back to collect the tools and restart the process. When you're 10' below ground level checking the shuttering of a footing and you realise that you don't have a plum. This could really change your mood and get you frustrated, the solution to this is your Andriod phone. Yes your Andriod phone can be used for such purposes. An android application named 'bubble' servers this very purpose. It uses your phone's proximity sensors and displays you the gradient between two points.
To check the plum hold your device on the stuttering and ask the mason to tilt the shuttering until the bubble coincides to the normal rest position.
Before using the app you should carry out calibration process and this app is just a substitute not a complete replacement to the actual plum as the readings on your device may change due to moisture, winds, etc.

Andriod As A Walkie Talkie


AssalamuAlaikum,
Dear Readers, As in my posts I’ve always been emphasized on the use of andriod devices. As one may notice that these devices have an all-round application like you can used it the way you want and for the task you want by just installing some applications.
Now coming to the topic ‘Andriod as a Walkie Talkie’
By searching over the play store you’ll find dozens of softwares that serve that purpose. I tried many and found some of them useful and some of them to be useless. There are basically two classes of such softwares depending on the mode of transfer they use that is Bluetooth or wifi. I preffered the Bluetooth as it consumes less battery and works more efficiently than the wifi version.
So just download the free app named Bluetooth Talkie and then you can create a connection between two mobiles and use them as walkie talkie without paying any charges to your telephone operator.
Please note that this works only for a limited range that is the range provided by the Bluetooth.
Regardless to its limited range it can be used for a number of applications like during a slab casting or electrical checking within the Bluetooth range…
Please note that for the above mentioned task I used Samsung Galaxy S Dous 2 S7582 so depending upon the device the results may be different for different devices..

Your Andriod Can Be a Measuring Tape

AsslamuAlaikum,
Dear Readers,
    In this post I shall be emphasising on the use and advantages of andriod od technology in instrumentation.
Yes the anderiod phone you carry everyday can even help you at site to take tentative measurements.
There are many such andriod apps available on the Google play store which serve the same purpose. One of them which I use is the 'GPS tape measure' it is a very good app and the interface is also easy all it requires is a GPS network.
Install it in your phone and you can use your phone to take measurements.
After you install the app and launching it it'll ask you to enable GPS after which it it'll show your current direction. To start the measurements hold your device near the start point and then press save location.
After you press save location the location will be saved then move your device to the other locations and you can see the distance traversed. The result are not accurate but one can get a tentative idea of dimensions.

Planning A farm house or A recreation zone? Don’t Forget to Have a Gazebo

AssalamuAlaikum,
            Dear Readers, this post is regarding a structure which is not common to all.
Firstly I would like to tell you what a Gazebo is and how it can boast the beauty and recreational activities. A gazebo is a open type of a structure which is open on all the four sides. It usually has walls upto 3’ ht from the ground level. The plinth of this structure is usually kept 1’ above from ground level to give it a platform type effect. If gardening and landscaping is done around it then it’s like a cherry on the cake. It adds beauty to the structure. As the structure is open air can pass freely and one can rejoice the cool breeze. This structure can platform to many of the recreational activities like music, games, etc. it can also serve as venue for barbeque servings and roasting corn during the rains. The gazebo is open from all sides and the roof is covered it can be kept transparent or opaque depending upon your preference. If it is transparent then sunlight can easily penetrate giving a great effect if its kept opaque then also it gives a great shady effect mostly now a days mangalore tiles for roofs is very famous and it also looks good and at the same type it absorbs the heat and keep the below part cool even in sunny atmosphere.

Here in this post I’m sharing a snap of a Gazebo which was created at a village near Lavassa.
The gazebo in the image is having its plinth done in Khandki stone. This stone is having many artistic applications and is being used to make corners, steps, etc. UCR masonary. The skeleton or the Frame of this structure is made of wood and roofing is of Mangalore tiles. The Gazebo is built just next to a swimming pool and landscaping is done near it.

Similarity Between a City and Human body [Smart City PPT]


    Headlines and Talk of the century, one of the most prominent topic in discussion since the new Government has been elected 'Smart City'. There are tremendous efforts being made to develop cities with such concepts.
What is a smart city? What comes into our mind is an extremely futuristic locality with automated systems and impressive communication technologies. Truly technology is what is required for efficient and smart working of a City but what today's presenters have done is just added an Electronic ILLUSION of highly modern equipments and how more comfort makes you feel being in a Smart City.
WHAT actually is a smart city?
  We at Hyonkows believe that a smart city is one that is able to cater the requirements of its citizens and also the Ecosystem associated with it.
It should be a place where one can be at peace and Harmony. What we've observed is that a smart city concept is presented in such a way that we all tend towards the technical part and neglect the Social side of it. Just imagine a person migrating from a village to a city, what does he expects from the city? Is it comfort or sustainable livelihood? No matter how far and wide the progress of Human race may sound or appear but we can't deny the basic requirements of Human Race.
A city that is capable of providing sustainable living filling these basic requirements is a SMART CITY.
Being consequential to our concept of Analogy between the city and the Human body it can be expressed how a city in many ways resemble a human body.
Firstly we can say that the different cells of a human body are like the Citizens of a Country called human body. The blood vessels are like the Transport Infrastructure finally the blood is like the public transport system that transports the delivers the required materials to different parts of the body.
Getting back to the topic, it should be learned from the architecture of Human body how it manages it's energy requirement and maintenance.
There are a number of methods in which a city can suffice it's energy requirements.
The Major Factor:
   Funds, any project extending beyond the limits is is discarded from execution so its really a challenge before Architects, Engineers and Financial Pioneers to plan something 'Wonderful'
What is essentials of a Smart City?
    City with a Smart Citizen is  smart city, without responsible citizens its impossible to make a city. Just creating a futuristic infrastructure isn't sufficient, we need to develop the social infrastructure; bridge the economic gap and boast social awareness amongst the Citizens.
