Systems Approach in Civil Engineering | BE Civil Elective Subject [PREP SUPPORT]

Systems approach is an easy subject and provides a great load of experience especially if you a person who is involved in coding and software related parts. For me personally, I was reluctant and had selected Advance Concrete Technology as an elective subject, on the recommendation of teachers and having reviewed the subject I decided to give it a shot.

This is subject is composed of a lot of math and techniques and it becomes really easy if you have learning aids,
Here are a few things that could help you while preparing for this subject.

This Video provides information on Unit 4 that includes Dynamic programming.

This is a playlist comprising of Concepts from Unit 5 & 6
Typically the Transportation model, Allocation and etcetera

This was about the videos and most commonly the last unit requires a bit of practice. I used the books that were about Operation Research but If you want to study about the syllabus of SPPU only then I would recommend Nirali, there are a few mistakes in the book but overall the author has covered the entire syllabus excluding the solutions on Golden section rule.

Sign Conventions for Plotting SFD & BMD | Useful for Structural Analysis & Design

Structural Analysis is about Plotting SFD & BMD to derive an idea of the forces the members are subjected to

Many times while studying or practicing the fundamentals of structural design I come across this problem, what were the conventions that are arbitrarily used for plotting an SFD or BMD? and this becomes a serious problem. So as a solution I decided to write a post so that I can bookmark all the basic fundamentals that are put into action while performing this academic task.

For analyzing any structure, first the SFD that is the Shear force diagram is plotted.

Here are the conventions that are being used:

Sign Conventions For Shear Force

This is how a typical SFD would appear like

Shear Force Diagram

Generally, all questions in the academic curriculum require you to plot a BMD and elastic deformation curve for the given set of loading, so here's how the sign conventions for BMD are determined.

Here are the conventions that are being used:

Sign Conventions for Bending Moment
If the resultant of the forces makes the element sag, then it is considered as positive else its' considered negative.

Either sagging or hogging both induce stresses in the member which could be better explained from the image below:

Finally once you've determined the BMD conventions and calculated the BMD, your final solution for the question would be something as follows:

This was all the text, I assume a video could explain the concepts to a better extent

Check out the video below to learn how to plot the SFD & BMD

Using Facebook Groups for BE Project | Productivity Hack

Co-ordination and Data Logging are one of the most important parts of a Project and when it comes to BE project it is extremely important to have all the documents and media in one place so that you can search and later on review the stuff while finalizing the thesis.

I tried using a couple of software and tools such as Asana, Trello, Google Groups, etcetera to coordinate the activities with my group. The sad part is that most of the members are reluctant to install the new software or are really scared to learn a new tool. It becomes very difficult at times when you are running an extremely de-motivated group & people are simply not interested in learning new means of management.

Check out our article on the use of Trello for managing Group Projects and activities

Then I came across Facebook groups, almost all adults and teenagers on this globe are having an account on Facebook and are actively using it for their daily leisure. It is often found that many students check their Facebook more often than their email. The best part of a Facebook group is that there is relatively no bar on the amount of Data that you keep there and the attachment size is also quite good, about 100mb files can be easily uploaded. Initially, we maintained a diary of daily meetings and tasks accomplished but as the time passed all such activities became obsolete and also the dairy went missing. So as a solution the facebook groups in secret configuration can be used to create a log of activities and reports which at the end can be compiled to prepare a summary of meeting notes. The best part is that photos and videos could be easily posted in the group making it a little fun to work.

My experience is that people won't try new stuff if they're boring, you somehow have to make those boring stuff appear fun. Like nobody likes to post a daily meeting note unless they're getting comments and likes. Another important part is that you can control the privacy of items you share in the group and who is having access to the parts in the group. Like by setting the group to closed, secret or open you can manage the audience that is supposed to have insights into your works.

Data savings is another part that I am very much cautious about, typically most task management software and email client provides limitations on the data transmission (though it is never consumed, limitations do make us feel sick on using them). As of my S&D, I didn't find any limitations on the sharing of items and data on Facebook. So why not make use of this free tool that is making people millionaires and uses it for our own benefit.
I would have preferred Google Groups for this task as it is much professional and better to use, also has tagging features, but the problem is that people aren't much used to and habitual of responding and updating on the Google groups. Especially when it comes to visiting a specific website to make a comment.

I like the update project feature on research gate but applying that for our projects requires to have the team of people who are actually willing to use and implement those online tools. Anyways Group projects aren't much of good experiences and somehow I hope this could make it less of a bitter experience.

Substitute Frame Method for Analysis of Frame using Microsoft Excel | SD3 Termwork

Encoded for Simplicity

It is extremely tedious to perform the calculation of forces in portal frame and when you have to reiterate the same procedure, it is better to have those task automated rather than performing manual reiterations.

Here while performing the analysis using the excel becomes very simple to use the formulas when you use the lines and other parameters to get the represent the data for simplicity. Here while I was performing the seismic design as a part of my termwork in the final year of Civil Engineering I'd used excel to automate much of my works and simplify the task instead of manually reiterating all the parts.

Check out All our Excel Templates and other tools to simplify works by clicking here

Please note that the excel sheet in the above file is made to suit a few of my own requirements and may not be compatible with your objectives.

BIM - A solution to end Corruption and Illegal Construction

Sophisticated yet simple and Useful

Being an Engineering Student and an intern at a few construction projects in Pune, I've observed a few drawbacks of the current sanctioning and town planning procedures. Most municipal offices require the applicant to submit a complete detailed draft of the project that is intended to be constructed, the draft includes all the blue-prints and other allied property papers. Usually this process takes a long time unless you have some good networking in the offices to hook up your works on priority. One main drawback is that even after having the proper sanctioning and licensing done from the authorities, you're still not safe to have your construction project going. Many times during the checking of Plinth for plinth certification, chances are you'll be asked for corrections and unnecessary modifications.
Another aspect of this is that many projects in Pune don't seem to consider sanctioning and are illegally built upon. This could be a major problem as it directly destroys the entire planning and harmony of the city.
As  a solution, IT could be implemented to act as a mediator between the authorities and the applicants to ensure justice and transparency between all parties.
A post shared by Er. Shadaab SAYYED | شاداب سيد (@sayyedshadaab) on

To know more about the project you can click the link below to read my article about construction scrutiny and application of BIM in governance.
BIM for construction scrutiny and monitoring
Introduction. India is a rapidly developing country and its infrastructure development is at an extremely large scale. In the human body, it is the DNA that controls the growth and development. But, when it comes to a city it’s the municipal authorities i.e. local government that are responsible for getting the task done.  In other words, Municipal authority refers to political administration of the smallest subdivisions of a country’s territory and population.

Environmental Engineering | Waste Water and Sewage Treatment

Climate change, Population growth all seem to be the instances wherein the society is required to act and take control of the mess they created themselves. Under such situations arises the opportunities for civil engineering aspirants to extend their contribution to society and make a fine living out of it, it's no wonder to see that environmental engineers have a higher probability of a good income as compared to the other fields as Structural or Geotechical.

A combination of Chemistry, Physics, biology and some civil engineering principles; this subject seems useless to most civil engineering students, the problem is that we're still rooted for Structural or Management, or Geotechical.

Let's get back to the topic:

I've prepared a playlist of videos from YouTube that are relevant to the syllabus of Savitribai Phule Pune University for Practicals in Environmental Engineering 2 (I'm sure most of us have missed a few classes 😉, we're BE students)

Click here to Add the playlist to your YouTube Library
The above playlist is a compilation of all the experiments included in the syllabus of Savitribai Phule Pune University for the subject of Environmental Engineering 2, BE Civil

Internet is one of the best medium to have an exposure to the concept and experience the practicals in a virtual for, many of us might not have able to have an hands-on experience in it though!

I'd attended a guest lecture in our college which was delivered by Mrs. . During the Session I took a few notes, in other words scribbled a few stuffs which I guess I should share with you'll for your reference...

I suppose the above text is might be difficult to decipher but it is just a little scribble of all the stuffs that I could record during the lecture..

Thanks for Reading...

I would like to express my sincere Gratitude to Mrs. for delivering a guest session and Mrs. for taking all the efforts in coordinating the session.

Research, Ethics & Tips to prepare a genuine research Paper.

Research, a term, and act of respect are losing its value at the hands of a few. These days I've observed an arms race to publish research works, much of it lacks authenticity and often a spam in the knowledge-driven world. People are doing acts that are offensive and a clear violation of ethical terms observed by research associates all over the globe.

We live in an information-driven world, the IT era and it is extremely vital that authentic information is available on the internet. The publications are responsible to be the gatekeeper to authentic knowledge and information but my experience makes me comment that it's not the case, they're willing to index and issue the certificate for any random article. This often leads to more plagiarism on the Internet, making it difficult for the genuine researchers to work and creating an environment wherein the CopyNinjas thrive.
People seem to have given up the qualitative aspect of research and just want to publish quantity which often ends up being useless and junk. There are thieves that pick up research material from people do a little editing and boom it is published, now bragging all around but they remember not that they're failing in terms of quality. Research should be published so that you can contribute something to the society and that's a prime reason for a heated debate in the subscription-based and open access Journals. What's happening these days is that people are just publishing for the sake of certification, I believe that without citations a research paper has failed in its objective.

People have often been found to just put in names as authors and have credits, this is a great monetary idea(and a business for few)  but when it comes to verification it is a disaster and could lead to a great damage on your profile and self-esteem.

Genuine and Innovative Concepts, Studies, et cetera are always appreciated...

So here are a few kinds of stuff you could do to have a genuine rating on your research paper :
  • Provide proper citations to works you have referred.
  • Most important, publish only what you have done and not copied from someone else. It is possible that you might be sued for copyright infringement.
  • Do not fall prey to nepotism, add only those people who have actually been the authors.
  • Prefer journals with good standing and name, a few journals published anything given to them.
  • Have a good vocabulary in your paper.
  • Have corrected punctuation and grammar in your paper.
  • Try to keep it concise and to the point avoid making a story of past and present (recently learned though 😉)
  • Give proper acknowledgments to people who'd supported you through the course of your research work.
We still live in a Human Driven world and unlike the machines our relations aren't like those of Client-Server address but defined and regulated by an important human emotion, 'Trust'
It is extremely important that your works are genuine and that the observations are reported without any manipulations, in the current context it is important that the results could be reproduced....

Moment Redistribution for Design of Continuous Beams

Design of structural members requires a lot of analysis and checks. Beams are a fundamental part of any structure and their design requires consideration of forces and their effects on the beam as a whole.
As a part of the structure, beams can be considered as two types single span or continuous span. The only differentiating element between the two types of beams is the consideration of beam a continuous or discontinuous. If the beam is taken as discontinuous then the effects of loading acting only on the span are to be considered, like the bending moment in the beam will be only due to the load present in the span and will not have any counteracting effect. These often lead to uneconomical designs as when the beams are designed as continuous the positive moment created by the load in one bay creates a negative loading in the other bay. In this fashion, the combined effect of loading creates a balance in the other adjoining span. Well, engineers have figured this out and have successfully exploited this phenomenon for designing economical structures to save material and cost.

As seen from the image above a lot of material is saved by designing the beam for net forces and actions instead of designing by the conventional single bay/span method.

How to perform MDM:

Moment distribution is performed by formulating a table wherein the moments are distributed by considering the stiffness factors and the fixed end moments of the spans. The moment is distributed until the moment at both the sides of a continuous joint are equal.
Check out the video below to learn more about the method:

Now once you've completed the calculation of moments from the beam you can formulate a table and then by considering the beams separately in each span calculate the reactions and then formulate the SFD and BMD. Now in order to design the members for worst case scenario. You can refer the image below to determine the load cases:

As a part of my BE termwork, I'd performed a similar analysis and determined the moments by considering the different cases. After performing the analysis I'd prepared a table of the moments:

By iterating the above sequence for the different cases I calculated the moments at the different sections of the beam. Once MDM is completed you are now to redistribute the moments to take the benefit of loading patterns. Up to 30% of the moments on the continuous supports can be redistributed to the adjoining spans. and by doing this the point of contraflexure can be shifted in order to make a structure more economical.

Now in-order to redistribute the moment select any continuous support, suppose you want to redistribute 20% of moments at support E, multiply the moment on support E by (100-20)% and then apply it on the span. Later by applying the loading calculate the reactions on the supports and then find the final bending moments.:
Check out the Video below to learn how to calculate the support reactions:
Calculate the reactions and then plot the corresponding bending moment diagrams for all the corresponding load cases. Perform the same sequence for all the cases, at the end it is recommended that you make a table to compare and evaluate the worst combination for design.

Now once you have the worst combination of Bending moment you can design the beams by considering the moments and the loading. Use the general design procedures for the design of flexural members under specifications as per IS 456.

Axial Forces Calculation Excel Template | Howe Truss - SD1 Termwork

Calculating the axial forces can be an absolute mess, but if you'd done it a few times you might have noticed that it follows a regular pattern. This pattern makes it easy to be coded and in a few minutes. For many of such works or the so-called group projects, I prefer having a custom template on Excel to get my jobs done rather than depending on someone else to do it.
So during the third year of my Civil Engineering, we had a group project to design a steel truss and it was an absolute pain to calculate the parameters, most of them were repetitive in nature so as a solution I made an excel template and then just by changing a few values I was able to get the design completed. Once my custom template or what I call the Microsoftware was ready, I could solve the design for others in a few minute as well. I'd added a few logical checks which enable the extreme scrutiny of design parameters so that there could be a lot of material savings.

So here is a part of the templates:

Axial Force Calculation for Howe Truss with 5 panels and a span of 16 meters
This was a spreadsheet I made after solving a few joint analysis problems and found the pattern that could be automated, later I used the same to solve the wind loads and live loads as well. So it is clear that by coding once you can use it multiple times and get your works done in a faster and efficient way.
Axial Force Calculation Spreadsheet Preview

Click Here To Download the Spreadsheet

Axial Force Calculation Spreadsheet Preview

How to Use the Spreadsheet

  • Edits to the Spreadsheet are disabled.
  • Enter the Nodal Loads that you'd calculated by the IS code Method in the fields specified.
  • Feed in the slope or the angle of inclination in the field as specified.
  • Scroll down to edit the angles formed at the different joints and modify if required.
  • By just feeding in the above mentioned values the cells will update with the correct values.
  • C represents compression and T represents tension in the members, the allocation of compression and tensions are to be done manually, ( I didn't had time to do that, neither the university cooperated to allow me to print the termwork. I had to write it by hand :-( , Yours might be a lucky chance! )
That settles it!

Google Classroom | Enhance the Virtual Academic Interaction

Google Classrooms, an education enhancement product by Google.

Internet without Google is hard to imagine and taking the educational aspects to a whole new level, Google had introduced its educational products. Basically, Google classroom offers an online platform for teachers and students to interact, it's like a virtual classroom that is online. Here the teacher can share the notes, study media and et cetera. The best part of it is the assignments, a teacher can upload assignments & the students receive an update via email regarding the deadlines and other relevant data. Having this information conveyed the students can work on the assignment, complete it and upload it in the classroom online. In this way the traditional printing and checking task could be eliminated, once the assignment is uploaded the teacher can review and also awards grades to the students based on the assignments.

This is a very good product and at the moment it's free for access....

So Now Let's get started...
If you're a Teacher, you might want to create a classroom, so follow the steps as below:
  • Visit
  • Sign in with your Google account with which you wish to create and operate the classroom
  • Click on the '+' (plus) button at the top right and then click on create class.
  • Then enter the details about the class name and subject details and click on create.
  • In this way, you can create the classroom.
  • Once you've created the classroom, its time to add students to it.
  • You can invite students by click on the student's tab and then by entering their email address you can add them.
  • Alternatively, you can share the classroom code with your students which can be used by them to join the class.

Learn to Create a Class within a Minute
I suppose its much of an introduction for the teachers..

Now for the students,
A few steps are common with an only difference of using the code to join the classroom, follow the steps as below:
  • Visit
  • Sign in with your Google account with which you wish to create and operate the classroom
  • Click on the '+' (plus) button at the top right and then click on join class.
  • Then type the code that you got from your teacher.
  • Alternatively, you can ask your teacher to send you an invite which you can accept via email.

Learn to Join a Class within a Minute

So in this way, both the student and the teacher can be connected on a common platform to share the important notes and assignments! It is available as an android app also.

Additional information, if you're from Department of Civil Engineering at Trinity College of Engineering and Reseach, you can access the Google Classroom Codes of all the faculties by clicking here.

Never Do it for Free | You'll Loose Value of your Service/Products

It's been a common saying that,
Whenever you're Good at Something never do it for free.

Most people relate it to remuneration in terms of rewards or benefits and so did I believe it to mean. Until now I never thought much about this quote, though people close to me reminded me of it frequently.

I'm a type of person who will dig the well only when there's extremely high need of water and won't bother wasting time over it. I have pretty much of other stuff to take care of, remember I'm an OPEN CATEGORY student!

So until now, I used to do a number of technical works in my college which involved development and implementation of new techniques. I used to do a lot of work, put in a lot of efforts and personal investments, yet would do it for free. People used to appreciate my work and I kinda liked doing them.

Well, your brain eventually matures and makes you think multidimensionally i.e. How, why? what's the profit, etc. It is this phase wherein you realize that people are just making use of your skills for their benefits and under a few instances not giving the value you require.

I did a lot of work for free and realized that people simply don't give value to your works on the other hands just consider if they would have paid me for my works, like it if the product would have required them to make a payment it would have been more valuable to them. They would have been more respectful towards the product. I made a few videos and managed the online activities of our Civil Engineering department of our college, lately I realized that just working for free people often take me for granted, get their work done and I do appreciate that I was able to help them but the sad part is that the product or service that I create or provide isn't valued or used too often and ends up just in files for reference. It is to be learned from the mistakes and experiences and I certainly take it into consideration as a result of which I would now be curtailing all the free services and would be leveraging my skills for monetary rewards.

It is extremely essential for one to be able to escape from the emotional state of unrest and attain peace of mind certainly, man is equipped with limited amount of motivation and with every effort you to put in a certain amount of motivation is consume and in-order to replenish the motivation stock you need positive affirmation and the best form of it is seeing your product being used and valued by others.

Another thing I commonly observed is that material output that is tangible is much valued by people than the intangible products such as videos, intellectual properties. This is certainly disheartening but you have to live with it....

Would simply like to end this with a small statement,
Anything that is available for free isn't valued!
Even the Gurus of the Ancient Indian Education system asked for Guru-Dakshina

Calculations of Moment using STAAD, replacing the Tedious Frame Analysis | SD3 Termwork

Frame Analysis

BLC: Be Lazy When you Have a Computer to Compute

It has been a common approach in structural analysis and especially while analysing for earthquake forces to use the Frame Analysis methods such as Cantilever Method and et cetera. These methods are very time-consuming error prone, a single mistake and the entire ship could sink.

The best part of living in the 21st century is the availability of software that could do the task for you, simply a few inputs and boom! your task is done. I personally use STAAD pro for a number of my analysis purposes and it is at the starting a bit difficult to get a grip over the software environment of STAAD but once you've learned it, its a skill you that could trade off your efforts. One such project is the designing of building for earthquake loads. And in order to analyze the forces and the moments acting on the structure you need to perform a frame analysis of the entire building which is very time consuming and tedious, it involves a number of computations if done manually. If I wouldn't have learned about STAAD pro I would have simply made an excel sheet to perform the analysis, but now I'm having the software so I simply don't need to waste my time on preparing excel sheets.

So let's get back to work:

In my analysis I used Excel sheet to calculate the loads that would be acting on each storey using IS codes, I could have done this on STAAD but the university syllabus necessitates me to manually estimate the earthquake forces :-) but bad hand-writing and extreme laziness to calculate manually every modification force me to code down an excel sheet to get the work done!

Check out the excel sheet I prepared to calculated the forces that were acting on the structure:

This required a little effort but its' completely automated now and I could simply have an active instantaneous modification with automatic adaptation of fields that are constrained by formulas.

Once this task is done, comes the terrible task of manually performing all calculations but here we have software for our assistance and we shall be performing the calculation on STAAD pro.

I made a model of the structure in STAAD, assigned the properties and loadings and then performed the analysis to get the outputs. Within a few seconds, the task that would have required me at least 30 minutes was completed. As the building was not symmetric I had to perform two different analysis in two different forms for the X-Z plane and the other for the Y-Z plane.

Output for BMD of Structure X-Z plane through STAAD

This one is for the X-Z plane and the BMD is just the same as we obtain by solving manually using the portal frame method, now as the building is asymmetric, there is need of performing the earthquake forces and portal frame analysis for the other direction also.

Output for BMD of Structure Y-Z plane through STAAD

So this is how you can use STAAD for calculating the BMD within a few minutes and save time and efforts.

Apply the loads in in the form of concentrated nodal loads on the floors in acting the X or Y directions only. Let me know about your experiences analysing structures on STAAD.

Until then

Reverse Engineering | Terrible and Surprising Interpretation!

I learned a lot by reverse engineering stuff and experimentation! yet a few won't understand how difficult it is to acquire a skill and simply fake up being more skilled.

With Great Skills come Great Responsibilities

It was an extremely different and varied approach to learn stuff on your own though not to forget the credit you owe to the YouTubers and your secret mentors, and all of a sudden you realize there'll be people in your life who are simply great in behaving as if they're masters at the performing the task and it is to be noted that they simply don't have any knowledge of it.

You shouldn't give the undeserved the privileged of a deserving, it simply ruins the compensate of the efforts.

There was a recent situation wherein I made a blog for a set of individuals and then there was a person to cite REVERSE ENGINEERING and ask me to spread the propaganda that I learned blogging from them when its surely not the case! I must at the moment come up and display off my real mentors, Bloggers, and YouTubers.

It is through the exposure of internet and the solitude that I'd learned blogging and other internet activities which otherwise would have been impossible....

Effects of reservation system in India | Its Time we end Reservation and empower the Deserved

This is one the best video that explains the ill effects of reservation in our Country!

The above video provides a great insights and motivates the deprived OPEN Category students and candidates to have pride and honor in their works. It basically shows how people get into the higher positions, despite being unqualified for the position and make misuse of their position. It is sad but the ugly truth of India's system of governance, few just because they belong to a certain caste or category are given extra privileges, I agree that it was once the need of the time but now the time has changed and people need to realize that we are living in an age where your caste doesn't matters. Its like we've to an extent bridged the economic gap that separated the two caste people and made the higher class more privileged in the past.

I agree that reservation should still exist and a there are a few really deserving people, but what I mostly observed is that a few well earning families are also still enjoying the benefits of the reservation system while they're economically capable of sustaining themselves. Its the honest taxpayers money that ends up in their savings account and India losses its budget in deficit again.

The current government started a campaign to convince wealthy and capable people to give up gas subsidy, why isn't there any initiative to end up reservation as well. What I've seen is our people want to remain in the reserved category and in tag themselves as the backward class or pretend to be as NOMADs, and such an attitude is sufficient to rogue a growth of any nation. History accounts that good nations are built and prospers if their citizens are having the attitude to have a higher standard, contrary to it, our people still want to enjoy the privileges of  being poor. Don't they realize that they are no good than a thief?

I've seriously had a great loss due to such reservations, in our college we had the earn & learn scheme; it wasn't a surprise that there was reservations in it too, why can't OPEN category students work hard and make their own living? And the other part is the Talathi Dakala, the Income certificate from an authority; this is the fake document that most Maha-e-seva kendras sell for around Rs. 400/- I've seen people having incomes in the range of Rs. 90,000/- per annum yet capable of affording trips and accommodation abroad. Isn't it so stupid? Who are they trying to fool? It seems like the government knows this and is purposely allowing this shit or they're simply too negligent to monitor such events. Or maybe because due to reservations, these people are holding the policy positions in the government?

I had a couple of great opportunities but simply as I belonged to the open category and I was stupid enough to follow all rules and regulations to lose them. Its not that our family earnings is too low, the problem is you become rich by saving money not by earning more. Here the Category people are having tonnes of savings. Like for me as an engineering student my annual fees is around Rs.1,00,000/- on the other hand the reservation people have their fees from around Rs.60,000/- to 10,000/- its a flat discount but the money that most OPEN tax payers paid. Sometimes I feel why is my family paying the tax to the government?

At the end of the video the person  OPEN category really knocks down the RESERVED category with some great responses.

This really motivated me and gave me a sense of hope that there'll be some places where reservation won't work and such people won't stand a chance at such places. So be proud and happy that you're born in an OPEN category family, life is hard only for the BEST people. Beggers somehow get their meal everyday, earning it is what gains you a respected position. At the end it is the self-satisfaction that is important.

Stay Calm, work hard and Never Give UP!

Don't Underestimate the Power of Microsoft Word | Tip for BE Students

Common Man on Earth And Common Software in Computer
A few things we've been doing completely wrong ever since we've used Microsoft Word.

Most engineering students are required to make reports for seminars, projects, visits and et cetera. I've observed that most of us don't make the complete use of this powerful tool that Microsoft has built.

BLC: Be Lazy when You're on the Computer
I remember the days when I used to refrain from using cut, copy and paste with a notion that it would be cheating :-P. That did had a few good effects though it may appear to be puerile. After having typed millions of words and publishing a couple of research papers I was fortunately enough to learn about this powerful tool. This software is a masterpiece and is being a common man in the lives of many, almost a part of every office, institute, etc.

Lets start by discussing each of the tabs available in the software:

The Home Tab:

Frankly we all see this and use it daily but our access is limited to the font, paragraph and Clipboard section only. Only a few put the styles section to use.
This style section provides a great comfort to provide the to hierarchically formulate the data. I strongly recommend learning and using this tool as after having your document structured by using the styles feature you can get the index made for free. I've seen students and seniors scrolling up and down, to manually make the index. Word does it for you! no need to do it manually. Just be a little structured in your documentation.
Check out the video above and learn how simple it becomes to complete the document using the styles feature.

The Insert Tab:

There's nothing special I could share about this tab, most of us I've seen use it efficiently.

The Design Tab:

There's nothing special I could share about this tab...

The Page Layout Tab:

There's nothing special I could share about this tab...

The Reference Tab:

This is the most useful and interesting tab if you're into research and report making. It's my personal experience and I know how painful it is to specify the citations or works that you've referred while working on your project. This tab simply makes it easy for you to add citations and references to your documents. All you need to do is add a few sources by clicking on the add citations button and then fill in the data that appears in the drop down list and boom! you're done. Just as you add the citations you can add a bibliography at the end that could be called as the reference section of your document. The bibliography provides different formats such as IEEE, etc. all you need to do is add the citations and then add the bibliography word will do all the formatting for you an also auto-update the references section as you keep adding up the stuffs.

Table of contents: Remember that in the early stage of the document I'd specified that you should use the styles feature, here is why and how you can make the table of contents for free without wasting time sorting down the text and filling pages manually. Go to the section where you want to add the table and click on the button, Boom! you're done as you add more titles and headings they'll be updated with the page numbers in your documents relieving you from the manual labour of adding the titles and modifying the page number manually each time you make a change.

If you've published any research paper you'll know how the reviewers knock out your thesis for small stuffs and one such is the Image captions, this tab simplifies that task as well and don't forget the freaky tables where we never applied any description such as Table 1, etc. The buttons on this tab also make it possible for you to automatically generate a list of figures and list of tables as required while making the black book in BE.

The Mailings Tab:

Seriously! even I haven't used this tab much but would love to learn more about this feature. I'd tried using the mail merge and had printed a couple of enveloped using this tab. Found it very useful and would like to have more information on it.

The Review Tab:

  I just love this feature....
Have you ever collaborated on any document? You might be aware of how painful it is to modify text and intimate your co-workers about the changes you've made and leave your comments for his understanding!
We work in teams and certainly most of our projects require us to make add text which are interdisciplinary so what we do is connect our PCs on network and work on the same documents, keep adding comments making modifications and later just click on compare and Boom! the two documents are merged into one and word is very smart to highlight the modifications made by you and the modifications made by other person, it also highlights the deletions and additions.
Later when you're on the completion phase you can use the accept and reject buttons to analyse and manage the outputs. It becomes extremely easy to manage the document if you're having too many collaborators.

The View Tab:

This tab includes stuffs that could make it comfortable for you to make the document easily like you can create two or more windows of the same document, supposedly if you're working on page 3 and want to refer page 10 of the same document this feature comes to a great aid.
I use this a lot when I'm using two screens, I open one window in one screen and the other in the second screen. Then it's all available to make the modifications and get the information.

These were a few tips that I wanted to share with you'll and would be glad to learn more such techniques you'd applied...

With this...
