Environmental Engineering | Waste Water and Sewage Treatment

Climate change, Population growth all seem to be the instances wherein the society is required to act and take control of the mess they created themselves. Under such situations arises the opportunities for civil engineering aspirants to extend their contribution to society and make a fine living out of it, it's no wonder to see that environmental engineers have a higher probability of a good income as compared to the other fields as Structural or Geotechical.

A combination of Chemistry, Physics, biology and some civil engineering principles; this subject seems useless to most civil engineering students, the problem is that we're still rooted for Structural or Management, or Geotechical. 

Let's get back to the topic:

Internet is one of the best medium to have an exposure to the concept and experience the practicals in a virtual for, many of us might not have able to have an hands-on experience in it though!

I'd attended a guest lecture in our college which was delivered by Mrs. . During the Session I took a few notes, in other words scribbled a few stuffs which I guess I should share with you'll for your reference...

I suppose the above text is might be difficult to decipher but it is just a little scribble of all the stuffs that I could record during the lecture..

Research, Ethics & Tips to prepare a genuine research Paper.

Research, a term, and act of respect are losing its value at the hands of a few. These days I've observed an arms race to publish research works, much of it lacks authenticity and often a spam in the knowledge-driven world. People are doing acts that are offensive and a clear violation of ethical terms observed by research associates all over the globe. 

We live in an information-driven world, the IT era and it is extremely vital that authentic information is available on the internet. The publications are responsible to be the gatekeeper to authentic knowledge and information but my experience makes me comment that it's not the case, they're willing to index and issue the certificate for any random article. This often leads to more plagiarism on the Internet, making it difficult for the genuine researchers to work and creating an environment wherein the CopyNinjas thrive. 
People seem to have given up the qualitative aspect of research and just want to publish quantity which often ends up being useless and junk. There are thieves that pick up research material from people do a little editing and boom it is published, now bragging all around but they remember not that they're failing in terms of quality. Research should be published so that you can contribute something to the society and that's a prime reason for a heated debate in the subscription-based and open access Journals. What's happening these days is that people are just publishing for the sake of certification, I believe that without citations a research paper has failed in its objective. 

People have often been found to just put in names as authors and have credits, this is a great monetary idea(and a business for few)  but when it comes to verification it is a disaster and could lead to a great damage on your profile and self-esteem.

Genuine and Innovative Concepts, Studies, et cetera are always appreciated...

So here are a few kinds of stuff you could do to have a genuine rating on your research paper :
  • Provide proper citations to works you have referred. 
  • Most important, publish only what you have done and not copied from someone else. It is possible that you might be sued for copyright infringement. 
  • Do not fall prey to nepotism, add only those people who have actually been the authors. 
  • Prefer journals with good standing and name, a few journals published anything given to them. 
  • Have a good vocabulary in your paper. 
  • Have corrected punctuation and grammar in your paper. 
  • Try to keep it concise and to the point avoid making a story of past and present (recently learned though 😉) 
  • Give proper acknowledgments to people who'd supported you through the course of your research work.
We still live in a Human Driven world and unlike the machines our relations aren't like those of Client-Server address but defined and regulated by an important human emotion, 'Trust'
It is extremely important that your works are genuine and that the observations are reported without any manipulations, in the current context it is important that the results could be reproduced....

Moment Redistribution for Design of Continuous Beams


Design of structural members requires a lot of analysis and checks. Beams are a fundamental part of any structure and their design requires consideration of forces and their effects on the beam as a whole. 
As a part of the structure, beams can be considered as two types single span or continuous span. The only differentiating element between the two types of beams is the consideration of beam a continuous or discontinuous. If the beam is taken as discontinuous then the effects of loading acting only on the span are to be considered, like the bending moment in the beam will be only due to the load present in the span and will not have any counteracting effect. These often lead to uneconomical designs as when the beams are designed as continuous the positive moment created by the load in one bay creates a negative loading in the other bay. In this fashion, the combined effect of loading creates a balance in the other adjoining span. Well, engineers have figured this out and have successfully exploited this phenomenon for designing economical structures to save material and cost.

As seen from the image above a lot of material is saved by designing the beam for net forces and actions instead of designing by the conventional single bay/span method.

How to perform MDM:

Moment distribution is performed by formulating a table wherein the moments are distributed by considering the stiffness factors and the fixed end moments of the spans. The moment is distributed until the moment at both the sides of a continuous joint are equal.

Now once you've completed the calculation of moments from the beam you can formulate a table and then by considering the beams separately in each span calculate the reactions and then formulate the SFD and BMD. Now in order to design the members for worst case scenario. You can refer the image below to determine the load cases:

As a part of my BE termwork, I'd performed a similar analysis and determined the moments by considering the different cases. After performing the analysis I'd prepared a table of the moments:

By iterating the above sequence for the different cases I calculated the moments at the different sections of the beam. Once MDM is completed you are now to redistribute the moments to take the benefit of loading patterns. Up to 30% of the moments on the continuous supports can be redistributed to the adjoining spans. and by doing this the point of contraflexure can be shifted in order to make a structure more economical.

Now in-order to redistribute the moment select any continuous support, suppose you want to redistribute 20% of moments at support E, multiply the moment on support E by (100-20)% and then apply it on the span. Later by applying the loading calculate the reactions on the supports and then find the final bending moments.:

Calculate the reactions and then plot the corresponding bending moment diagrams for all the corresponding load cases. Perform the same sequence for all the cases, at the end it is recommended that you make a table to compare and evaluate the worst combination for design.

Now once you have the worst combination of Bending moment you can design the beams by considering the moments and the loading. Use the general design procedures for the design of flexural members under specifications as per IS 456.

Axial Forces Calculation Excel Template | Howe Truss - SD1 Termwork

  Calculating the axial forces can be an absolute mess, but if you'd done it a few times you might have noticed that it follows a regular pattern. This pattern makes it easy to be coded and in a few minutes. For many of such works or the so-called group projects, I prefer having a custom template on Excel to get my jobs done rather than depending on someone else to do it.
 So during the third year of my Civil Engineering, we had a group project to design a steel truss and it was an absolute pain to calculate the parameters, most of them were repetitive in nature so as a solution I made an excel template and then just by changing a few values I was able to get the design completed. Once my custom template or what I call the Microsoftware was ready, I could solve the design for others in a few minute as well. I'd added a few logical checks which enable the extreme scrutiny of design parameters so that there could be a lot of material savings.

So here is a part of the templates:

 This was a spreadsheet I made after solving a few joint analysis problems and found the pattern that could be automated, later I used the same to solve the wind loads and live loads as well. So it is clear that by coding once you can use it multiple times and get your works done in a faster and efficient way.

How to Use the Spreadsheet

  • Edits to the Spreadsheet are disabled.
  • Enter the Nodal Loads that you'd calculated by the IS code Method in the fields specified.
  • Feed in the slope or the angle of inclination in the field as specified.
  • Scroll down to edit the angles formed at the different joints and modify if required.
  • By just feeding in the above mentioned values the cells will update with the correct values.
  • C represents compression and T represents tension in the members, the allocation of compression and tensions are to be done manually, ( I didn't had time to do that, neither the university cooperated to allow me to print the termwork. I had to write it by hand :-( , Yours might be a lucky chance! )

Google Classroom | Enhance the Virtual Academic Interaction

Google Classrooms, an education enhancement product by Google. 

Internet without Google is hard to imagine and taking the educational aspects to a whole new level, Google had introduced its educational products. Basically, Google classroom offers an online platform for teachers and students to interact, it's like a virtual classroom that is online. Here the teacher can share the notes, study media and et cetera. The best part of it is the assignments, a teacher can upload assignments & the students receive an update via email regarding the deadlines and other relevant data. Having this information conveyed the students can work on the assignment, complete it and upload it in the classroom online. In this way the traditional printing and checking task could be eliminated, once the assignment is uploaded the teacher can review and also awards grades to the students based on the assignments. 

This is a very good product and at the moment it's free for access.... 

So Now Let's get started...
If you're a Teacher, you might want to create a classroom, so follow the steps as below:
  • Visit
  • Sign in with your Google account with which you wish to create and operate the classroom
  • Click on the '+' (plus) button at the top right and then click on create class.
  • Then enter the details about the class name and subject details and click on create.
  • In this way, you can create the classroom.
  • Once you've created the classroom, its time to add students to it.
  • You can invite students by click on the student's tab and then by entering their email address you can add them.
  • Alternatively, you can share the classroom code with your students which can be used by them to join the class.

I suppose its much of an introduction for the teachers..

Now for the students,
A few steps are common with an only difference of using the code to join the classroom, follow the steps as below:
  • Visit
  • Sign in with your Google account with which you wish to create and operate the classroom
  • Click on the '+' (plus) button at the top right and then click on join class.
  • Then type the code that you got from your teacher.
  • Alternatively, you can ask your teacher to send you an invite which you can accept via email.

So in this way, both the student and the teacher can be connected on a common platform to share the important notes and assignments! It is available as an android app also.
